This is just another step that shows why WordPress stopped being “just a blogging platform” long ago. For those of who think that WordPress can’t be anything more than just a blogging platform, stop by the CMS section of the official WordPress Showcase for some great examples of WordPress used as a CMS all around the world.

The Open Source Awards is an annual online event held by Packt Publishing to distinguish excellence among Open Source projects. The Award, formerly known as the Open Source Content Management System (CMS) Award, is designed to encourage, support, recognize and reward a wide range of Open Source projects.

Here is a complete list of the new features:

_Video. Record, upload, attach, and play videos within the app. Yay for being able to catch your friends’ and co-workers’ most embarrassing shenanigans creative moments with iPhone video and publish them immediately for all the world to see on your WordPress site.
_A total rewrite of the way local drafts are handled, to prevent the unintentional loss of your pending posts.
_Autosave/post revisions. Bam! One of the “oh, thank goodness” features of the web app makes it into the iOS version.
_Easier setup. Faster and easier process for adding your sites to the app.
_Media Library. We’re gradually getting closer to the media management you’re used to in the web app.

There are also numerous bugfixes and performance enhancements in this release, so if you haven’t been using the app lately, you should consider giving it another try. I’m personally pretty excited to start using the iPhone version more often now that there are all these fixes and new features. Especially the video upload. You know, for those creative moments that make life fun.

Matt Mullenweg is obviously excited, as”the most central piece of WordPress’s identity, its name, is now fully independent from any company.” Ownership of the trademark could have made Automattic millions on the name alone, but in a move praised as “extremely generous and community-minded,” they are ensuring that both WordPress and its name will never be used to unfairly profit from, confuse, or cause harm to the blogging platform, its integrity, and the community itself.

Download 3.0.1 from WordPress.org or update automatically from the Dashboard (Tools -> Upgrade) in your site’s admin area. If you encounter any trouble with the automated updater, try deactivating your plugins before reinitiating the update.

“We’re now starting to re-follow real people from the WordPress community. There will be no more auto-follow. If you are a WordPress developer, designer, blogger, fan site, whatever and would like to appear in the @WordPress updates stream, then send an @ reply to us and we can add you to the new list (assuming you’re not hawking diet pills, free iPads or ways to get a million followers). This way, people who are new to WordPress and go to check us out on Twitter will get a sense of the vibrant community that we have. People who send @ messages to us won’t (hopefully) wonder indefinitely why they were ignored, because without all the spam, maybe we can use Twitter as it was intended to be used, as another channel of communication.”

Another improvement is the options panel. The URLs were “sanitized” to avoid undesirable characters to display in the output. It may sound too technical, I know. Basically it’s to comply with the latest wordpress version security demands.

When you create a new article, each entry will be found in multiple pages, including the home page, the archives, categories, older pages, calendar, etc. All of these pages are potential duplicated content pages. Once the blog entry becomes older, it starts moving down the page stack. Soon, it takes more and more clicks to reach that article, and then at some point it gets excluded from the search engines.

There are many ways to deal with this issue. For example using a Sitemap is a good way to list all your articles directly in one page. You can use a Sitemap plugin for wordpress. Another solution is to link to the older articles from your internal pages or from your new articles. You can also bundle important long term pages in another hotspot reference area for easy finding and crawling.
